This voyage is associated with a well-known story. It is set post-Mahabharat, during the great battle of the late Dwapar Yuga, waged between the Pandavas and Kauravas. They become responsible for the deaths of innumerable living animals. They chose to worship and do penance for Lord Vishnu to cleanse themselves of the previous sins and gain salvation. However, Lord Brahma later advised them to approach Lord Shiva for assistance. The Pandavas began their quest in search of Lord Shiva.

There was no hope that Lord Shiva would grant the Pandavas the wisdom they needed to be saved.  He was, however, willing to keep a tight check on them. So he disguised himself as a calf and began spying among the Pandavas. Bheema had a feeling. He decided to experiment to discover the identity of the calf. He put one foot on Shivalik and the other on Kedarkantha. And he requested that Sahadeva and Nakula pass all Himalayan creatures beneath his legs. Calf refused and went into hiding.

Bheema's suspicions were confirmed. The Pandavas began searching for the calf, but it began to vanish inside a wall. He grabbed his tail and began pulling it out. Due to the tremendous strength used, the calf cracked and fell apart. As the organs disperse around the Shivalik range, they eventually become shrines. Kedarkantha peak is said to have fallen on his throat region.

"Kedar" refers to Lord Shiva, while "Kantha" signifies the throat. A climb up the Kedarkantha peak can bring you closer to the holiness of this place.
